Door County: Deer

by Zoe/Platypie
in a land of daydreams (which my teachers say I visit too often)

First full day in Wisconsin,
The woods shone bright in morning,
And I was the first to see them,
During a breakfast of fried eggs.
Two deer, about a year of age.
COming through the woods,
Their brown pelts shining.
ALl my family flocked to the window,
And we stared at them.
Watching them eat greenery,
Until, from my grandparents' room,
Came scrabbling paws and a jingling collar,
ANd because of a Schnauzer, the deer fled.

Second full day,
Earlier this time, before breakfast,
I spotted the deer again,
Two young bucks this time,
And silently, we all watched from the window.
Even the dog, who was drooling but silent.
And the deer did not leave,
Though sometimes they would wander from veiw,
Or butt with small antlers.
They'd come back, quite a splender.
Until finally they both walked away,
And didn't return.
