Chapter 2:
Mister Melcony

Amy stepped into her room, and dropped her gym bag and pillow then raced upstairs to greet her Mom.
“No I don’t remember Amy telling me that she was accepted to any school at all. Then again, I could be mistaken, it might have slipped my mind.”
Amy was almost afraid to go into the room but she did anyway.
The room looked same as usual, but a man was sitting in a red armchair placed in the corner. He had short black hair, he was also tall.
“Ah,” he said, “This must be Amy.” He stood up and crossed the hall to shake her hand.
“Yes that is Amy.” Mrs. Wrights replied, “Amy this is Sam Melcony and he’s one of you’re new teachers at some school. Is there something that you forgot to tell me?”
“Um. I got this, er- email yesterday about being accepted to some school and I thought it was a joke someone was playing on me so I never replied.” She lied.
“Well I can assure you that this is no joke. Now would you want to come with me to collect your new school things or would you rather stay and go to a regular Middle School?” Sam Melcony asked.
Amy sat in silence for a moment taking it all in. “Yes.” She replied, “I’ll go.”
“Excellent. We’d best be off now.” He led Amy out of the condo complex and into town.
“If you don’t mind me asking, but what do you do at the school?” Amy asked after a while.
“I’m a teacher. I teach Astronomy at Gontel.”
“Stargazing?” she asked.
“There’s more to astronomy than that, but yes, stargazing.” Mr. Melcony replied.
Amy nodded. “Um, so this school, where is it exactly?”
“Oh, a little ways away from California so to speak. Or at least I think it is. Hard to be for sure on its location. But that’s no matter as long as we get you there and get you there safely.”
She faked a grin. This Melcony dude was getting stranger by the minuet. I hope he even knows where he’s supposed to take me. He’s not my first choice for an escort. But she could care less about the man taking her off to some strange place. She was more concerned about what the heck was going on.
“Okay,” she began, “I want answers and I want them now. What in the blazes is goin’ on?”
Mr. Melcony looked down miserably. He knew it was only a matter of time before she would ask this, just he never expected it so soon. Mr. Melcony took a deep breath and began, “You were born without a father only because he was a wizard and was in the war going on at the time. Was dyeing on the battle field but in reality he actually died after he saw you and that was something.”
“War? What war?” Amy inquired.
“The war of Talanor. A fool’s war if you ask me, but well others thought differently. Your father on the other hand had a fine reason for going. He wanted his excitement. Couldn’t blame him. He was young and we were close friends, but being so young he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Naturally I went along with him promising your mother to keep an eye on him. Like him, so your mother tells me, you both had a knack for getting yourselves into trouble. I hope you’ll mind your business in school.” Melcony replied.
“I have no intention of giving myself a bad reputation.” Amy said using big words to impress him. Even for a sixth grader she had a large vocabulary. Though she wasn’t the best at spelling anything.
Sam Melcony smiled, “I suppose you are wondering what you’re to call me while you are at school. Well it’s Mr. Melcony. Though I prefer my given name Sam so for now outside school you may call me just that, Sam”
“Okay,” said Amy, “Sam.”
They walked for what seemed like hours and Amy was doused in sweat, but Sam, well he was just there walking beside her whistling. He didn’t even seem to be tired.
“Yes, yes. You seem tired.” He said, glancing at her, “How about a tall glass of cherry coke in this restaurant?”
“That’s all very kind Sam, but I’m rather not very fond of soda. The carbonation is something I don’t seem to enjoy.” Amy replied.
“Then perhaps some lemon-aid or iced water. You do seem much like a witch. Most of us magic folk love to use big words to impress or annoy. Then there is the fact that you seem to have an odd dislike for things, such as my dislike of chocolate or coffee. And yours, soda, and other things such as maybe adults who seem to understand you more that you do?” Sam didn’t directly ask to question, but asked it all the same.
“Well that depends on if I believe that that person is trying to reveal something that I find should not be.”
“You are indeed much cleverer than I had expected you to be. Apparently you know more about yourself than most kids your age do.” Sam just seemed to babble as they walked into a noisy restaurant.
“Two please.” Sam told the waiter.
The waiter nodded and led them to a small table at the back of the building that was well air conditioned, and beautifully designed. They were handed menus and the waiter hustled off.
Amy took a pony-tail holder and pulled her hair up. Her face was as redder than a well polished red delicious apple. She looked rather worn out, and there was still much more ground to cover.
She looked the menu over and decided on a nice Salisbury steak, and a nice cool glass of iced water.
Once the waiter came back and took there order Sam asked Amy if she had ever been to California.
“Once,” she said, “When I was really little. My mom took me there for a visit to my grandmother’s. But well she died while we were landing we ended up spending our vacation going to a funeral. I was three. You know ever since then, I’ve known that there was something more to me than just that miserable little scrap of nothing with no father or grandmother to call her own. Two of the most important things in my life had just been taken away and I promised myself no one else would be taken from me. That was something I knew could never, ever, keep. But I tried and saved my aunt from drowning. And my baby cousin he almost died from drinking peroxide. Luckily I called the hospital just in time. I dunno I just seem to get luckier than I should.”
“Not to be a cloud on your sprit but you do get luckier than you should. You see when you have magic in your blood then you seem to get lots of good luck, but then more bad luck. You seem to be more powerful than you realize, that means well that you need to take extra precaution when you go out on your own. There are people in this world who know about us and will stop at nothing to vanquish all they do not understand.” Sam was sounding very glum. As if he’d been hunted down like that before and survived.
The food came out and Amy had to choke back a question before it slipped out of her lips and broke their cover.
“Is there anything else that you may like sir ma’am?” the waiter asked.
“No thank you.” Said Sam politely.
“I don’t think I need anything more thank you.” Amy replied modestly.
“Yes, just give us a call if you need anything.” And off he went.
Amy took a good big bite out of her steak. The juices leaked out of the piece of steak that was in Amy’s mouth.
Sam watched as she gulped down the water with great pleasure. He then remembered that Amy still had to develop her powers and could not yet travel long distances without rest. He wasn’t even sure she could do it with her powers fully developed. Some couldn’t, and Sam sensed that she was made for travel which meant that she might not learn it. Witches and Wizards built for travel almost never learn long distance shelding as they called it. But ones who never travel well they learned it because it was easy for them to go longer distances with more speed too. But sometimes once the travelers got more used to it they could swing up mountains easily as if it were climbing a tree. And run the longest filed like a mustang in the wild.
Sam looked at Amy and she looked back at once Sam saw the mischievous look in her eyes, right then he knew this was one special kid.
